We followed “Ninja” to his next big challenge – Surfing with Pro surfer and goFlow Local Expert Kassia Meador. We had a fun early morning at Malibu point while “Ninja” is getting into the flow with the queen of style, Kassia.
After the session we set down with “Ninja” to a long and deep conversation, learning about his life experiences, challenges, inspirations and the expectations to have a successful career that generate a lot of money – because that’s happiness. Right? Well….
Right after business school our soon to become “Ninja” ended up spending hours at Muscle Beach training and focus on his movement and flow. Less then 4 years after he won the title of America Ninja Worrier.
Ninja Warrior, Yogi and Venice Local, Travis Brewer embodies what the journey of life is. Struggling to find his place in all of it; he went from college life to business professional, being uprooted each and every-time. Embracing meditation on a whim, Travis discovered his passion for fitness and desire to make the world a better place. Doing exactly just that, Travis started his company, Pi Movement and followed the path that movement took him on. We joined Travis for a morning session of movement and surfing, lucky to ask him about his path.
Q – How did you become a Ninja?
How did I become a ninja? Well, it’s funny. Growing up. I always wanted to play sports. I did gymnastics when I was a little kid and then in Middle School, I quit to play other sports. Track, Soccer, Football. Pretty soon, I was on a state champion Soccer team. All I wanted to do was play sports in College but I blew out my knee, tore my ACL, LCL and PCL. I couldn’t wiggle my toes and ended up not playing sports for 3 years. I was shot… I didn’t know what to do. I was stuck. I joined a fraternity for a little while till I got kicked out of that. I didn’t know where I wanted to be. So I decided to get a job that makes a lot of money, because money equals happiness, right? I worked in commercial real estate for 3 to 4 years, then the market crashed in 2008 and I lost my job… and it was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I realized that I was just doing a job to make my Mom and Dad happy. I was always passionate about movement, fashion, entertainment and fitness but I didn’t really know how to make that a thing. So I just started reading and learning. Steve Jobs passed away that year and I read his book. When he passed, he gave one book to everybody, “Autobiography of a Yogi.” Inspiring. I still didn’t know what I wanted to do exactly… but I decided to go back to grad school at Pepperdine. Funny thing was, I probably learned more going to Lake Shrine after school then I would in class. But what I learned was that I wanted to make the world a better place and I wanted to follow what I think my unique gift and passion for the world is… I went there and meditated all of the time. And through meditation I discovered that my passion is movement. Specifically, fitness and philanthropy is what I enjoy. If I could work out everyday and give back to make the world a better place, I think I would be happy. and that’s just exactly what I decided to do. I was 29 at the time and by the time I hit 30 I wanted to figure out what my path was and what I wanted to do. I decided I just needed to start working out. Literally the day I graduated… After the ceremony, I headed down to Muscle Beach to work out. I met a bunch of guys that were starting a calisthenic group and ended up joining their crew. I beat one of the top ranked guys in all of calisthenics and won the world calisthenics organization “Battle of the Bars.” I got discovered my Ninja Warrior and ended up on Team Ninja Warrior. That’s been the journey and it’s been the best 4 years of my life.
Q – What is Pi Movement ?
I figured if I could make ninja pants or workout gear, that makes the world a better place then I’d be happy. So I started Pi Movement in an attempt to do exactly just that. It stands for Positive Impact Movement, which we call Pi for short. We try to make a difference by giving Pi percent or 3.14% back on every purchase to building more movement parks around the world. That’s what we do. We make pants and further down the line more ninja apparel.
Q – What does Ninja mean to you ?
Ninja for me, is more of a mind, body and spirit connection than anything else. Ninja is more than just American Ninja Warrior to me, although it is a great show. I don’t necessarily think how much you can squat is as important as how high you can jump or how efficiently you can get over something. Ninja is really about being functional and efficient with your movement as well as being adaptive for the most scenarios possible. How well can you get up on a surfboard? How long can you hang from something? To me, those are tangible goals. I think American Ninja Warrior is great because you have to be good at a lot of different things. But to me, ninja functional fitness is about being as functional as possible and having fun while you’re doing it.
Q – Where do you like to train the most?
My favorite place to train is the original Muscle Beach in Santa Monica. It was the first outdoor adult playground of its kind. It’s the birthplace of acrobatics and where the whole culture of outdoor fitness really started. It started in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s but shut down for a while and then the Venice park took off in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, becoming pop culture. More so than bodybuilding, I’m attracted to the functional and acrobatic movement you can find at Muscle Beach, Santa Monica… Acro Yoga, and being able to move as efficiently as possible, working with the people around you. I think that is so valuable. That type of movement really inspires me because you have to be able to move your body in so many different ways, adapting to other people, their surroundings and their visions… Just as much as yourself. These interpersonal communications are really so valuable as they translate to every facet of life.
Q – How do you recharge your personal battery?
You know, just getting outdoors. Going on a hike, climbing a tree, getting in the mountains… It doesn’t really matter. Any of that stuff. I love to rock climb and rock climbing indoors is awesome. It’s great practice. I love doing parkour and parkour in a gym is great. Working on safety. But it’s so good to just get out in nature. Just realizing that we really are connected to nature the more we move outdoors. The more we can get out with mother nature’s sun and soil, the more we can recharge our batteries. And the water, just getting out there surfing is so good. Everyone always says “being a soul surfer.” But it’s so true because the surf, waves and ocean recharge the soul. Even if you don’t catch a single wave. Sitting out there in the water, hanging out and feeling the good vibes of mother nature is the best. It really helps recharge your battery just so you can be you. Don’t emphasize on how much you need to do in life… It’s more about positive progression. Like, “Hey. Did I do a little bit better than yesterday? Or did I do a little bit better than last week? Or am I moving forward more than I did last year?” That’s how we judge ourselves… If we’re having a good or bad day, or how we are making progress in our lives. Positive progress, getting out there and moving with nature: there’s nothing wrong with making that your mission.
“So nature and outdoors is the ultimate place for you?”
Oh yeah. It’s where everything collects.
Q – What is Flow for you?
That’s why I love goFlow. Once you get into nature and you’re connecting that. Recharging that battery. Beyond that, it’s all about the mind, body and soul connection and finding flow states. When you’re in the flow, you lose track of time. In that movement where I just can’t miss. NBA Jams. On fire. Where you hit multiple consecutive shots and you’re just in the zone. That. That is the flow state. The Flow state comes from you and you’re just getting off axis. From getting upside down, twisted, or riding a wave. Where you’re riding something greater than yourself. On a board, surf, snow or skate: you’re in flow. and what a great feeling that is. I do a lot of work with the Flow Genome Project; quantifying flow states through science. Not only how to get there, but how to get there faster and stay longer. So more of the world, can get in the flow. Doing research with these guys has been so beautiful to understand what flow is and how great it is for the soul… Cause, that’s what I live for and where my happiest state of life is. And the goFlow app, it makes all so easy to do. Finding flow sports and making them more accessible to people. You can find flow in so many different ways, and so many different things besides just flow sports. Flow sports just make it more accessible. “Flow is everywhere”
Q- What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
The first thing I do when I wake up in the mornings is meditate… I stretch, meditate and then write in my journal. I do this everyday.
Q – What do you write about in your journal?
It’s changed over the years. It’s so funny, I never thought of myself as a writer, and I don’t really. But when I first started to journal, I couldn’t fathom what to write about. I started out small and in typical diary format: what I did yesterday, what I am feeling right now. Somewhere along this path, all the simplistic jotting down I was doing, turned into really just manifesting. We can achieve anything we manifest. Why not write down what we want to achieve? I would write down my goals on the top of the page everyday, and then write down what I did. From there, I started to really delve deeper into my soul: what my soul is and what my intuition is saying. Putting all of these monumental concepts and thoughts into tangible, in-your-face words. And for now, it’s more of guided thoughts of where I think I need to be, what I need to be doing or the language that I need to hear… But from the beginning, I just started writing what made me happy or what I did that day.
Q – What is the ultimate breakfast?
For me, the ultimate breakfast would be a SunWarrior Smoothie with some Smartypants Vitamins on the side.
Q- What do you put in your SunWarrior smoothie?
I mix my smoothies with Strawberries, Bananas and Blueberries
Q – What is the first thing you do before you go to bed?
I stretch both at morning and again, at night. I do a little stretch and then I say my peace before going to sleep. It’s so important to complete that full circle… You know, why are we living. Set your intention before you go to sleep and when you wake up. Bring that manifestation to life. Don’t live for others. Live for what your mission in life is, or whatever you want to create of it.
