My goFlow Gratitude List

Whether or not you celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, cultivating and expressing gratitude are an important part of being and staying in your “flow state”. I try to find gratitude everyday, not just during this time of year, because I find it helps me maintain a positive and happy state of mind.

Ready, Steady, Fall – Tips for Maximizing the Stoke this Season with LA Local Expert Giancarlo Ranaudo

There may be heatwave currently winding its way through Southern California, but it’s still officially Fall in the Northern Hemisphere.  That means an end to 8pm sunset surf and paddle sessions after work and eventually a cooling off of the ocean and the air.  We may not have extreme seasonal temperature fluctuations here in SoCal, but we definitely notice a change that affects our flow sport rituals & routines.  We caught up with Los Angeles Local Expert, Giancarlo Ranaudo, to learn more about how the onset of Fall changes his surfing flow and to get some sagely advice on how to maximize the fun during this time.

Q1: What’s the first thing you notice that tells you Summer is officially over and Fall has begun?

Meet the Pro: Noa Hopper, Standup Paddleboard Racer

goFlow Community, meet San Diego local and Pro Paddleboarder, Noa Hopper.  Noa began SUPing at the tender age of 11, but began practicing other paddlesports long beforehand.

We had a chance to catch up with Noa after returning from some summer training in Hawaii to get the 411 on paddleboarding, his routine, why sharks rule and where to grab a scrumptious post-session burrito in San Diego.

 

Q – What’s the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

 

Wake up and check the surf/wind conditions and decide if I’m gonna go for a paddle and/or surf. Then get a bowl of Life (cinnamon obviously), and if the surf is bad I’ll go through old GoPro clips and work on my surf/paddle edits.

 

 Q – When did you start Paddleboarding? And how did you find about it?

 

I started standup paddling when I was 11, but I’ve doing other paddlesports ever since I can remember. My dad was the head coach of the USA Dragon Boat team, so by the time I was 14 I’d been to China 17 times.

 

It really opened my eyes to see how the rest of the world lives, and gave me more initiative to try and change the world’s perspective on the ocean, specifically sharks. That’s why I’m taking Chinese in high school (Bishops) right now. I want to be able to convince people that sharks are not mindless creatures bent on killing every human in sight… That the ocean and the entire shark population is worth more than a bowl of soup (see shark finning).

Q – What does your daily routine look like?

 

Wake up at 6 and go for a flat water paddle 8-10 miles out from South Mission Beach channel to Tourmo and back.

 

Meet up with the boys for breakfast at Konos (big breakfast, French toast) then go surf at a reef in LJ or SUP surf in Del Mar.

 

By then it’s 11:30, so we’ll go get burritos after at Robertos (California burrito with beans), then we’ll go hang out at Windansea for a few hours and try to get rid of my wetsuit tan.

 

Come home to refuel and take a nap, then go do a sprint workout on the SUP, then right after I’ll go for a 6-man outrigger practice from 5-7. Come home again for dinner then go hang out with some friends!

 

Q – Do you have any special exercise or diet as a Pro Athlete?

 

I’m not on any special diet or anything, but I try to be conscious of what goes into my body (i.e. cut back on burritos). Acai bowls are my favorite.

 

Q – What’s the most special experience you have had in the water while paddleboarding? 

 

I just spent the last month in Hawaii, and one day I woke up at 4:30 am because I was still on California time, and looked out at the ocean and saw some splashing about a quarter mile offshore, so I decided to go check it out..

 

It was sill kind of dark but the sun was just coming over Mauna Kea, so the ocean had a golden mist floating off it. I took a standup board out but the splashing had stopped by the time I got out there.

 

All of a sudden this dolphin maybe only 5 feet long jumped out of the water 20 feet from me. I dove in the water with my GoPro and there were hundreds of dolphins all around me.

Q – What does ‘being in the flow’ mean to you?

Stay mellow, don’t be negative, always stand out.

 

Q – What’s your life motto?

Q – What’s next for you?

 

A whole lot of training! Also Pacific Paddle Games in Dana Point is the next big Standup race for me so… Fingers crossed.
